Tutoring Chemistry at Signal Peak Campus
Resources: The best learning resources are those prepared by the student for specific assignments or exams.
The preparation of learning resources by the student is the most important part of the learning process.
|
In different tutoring services, tutors help with learning resources
differently.
|
Open Doors | One-on-one Tutorials | Small Study Groups | Conceptual Workshops |
| Tutors help students organize
and/or design appropriate learning resources for assignments and exams.
To provide opportunities for active learning, tutors help students with appropriate braking of chemistry tutorial to learning wavelets. |
In open-door type of tutorials, the student should have all resources readily
available. The tutor checks if the resources are sufficient and help as needed. If the student has a clear question, the tutor may help with learning wavelets instead of answering the question. Example |
The advantage of one-on-one tutorials is that the
tutor has the opportunity to focus on specific learning needs. The first session is the time when the tutor helps the student with the art of organization and management of resources for learning chemistry.
|
Study groups are natural. Students may form
unsupported study groups. Students help each other to prepare resources needed for the assignments and exams. The tutor may assist with textbooks from related disciplines, scaffolds, ideas, technology, etc. |
In conceptual workshops, the facilitators provide original resources. |
|
Tutors consider first all resources suggested by the
Instructor.
Tutors may assist the student to add or design more resources, as needed. |
In open-doors tutorials, the tutor first help the student with breaking the problem in manageable pieces. Next, the tutor checks if the student has appropriate resources for each part of the problem. The challenge for working in open-door tutorials is that different students will need different organization and management of learning resources. |
In one-on-one tutorials, the resource-related goal is to
help the student with resources suggested by the instructor. The assistance with resources should be careful. The tutor gradually move from simple resources, such as textbook, syllabus, notes, to more sophisticated resources, such as flash cards, mind maps, flowcharts/, visuals, animation, PowerPoint, etc.. |
In small groups, students help each other with different resources. Tutors facilitate the group work by making sure that all students have appropriate resources. During the session, the tutor should help students prepare resources for assignments and exams. |
In some learning workshops, the goal of the
workshop may be to assist students with a creative design of different learning
resources.
