Topic:                                                        Using Excel for Linear Functions

Gary Adams in collaboration with Temenoujka Fuller

2006 - 2008

Rationale: This is the second part of long-running workshops. The workshop has the same 4 phases as the workshop on Taking Notes with PowerPoint. The difference is that this is the next class of the three classes on arithmetic and algebra. The workshop is organized in the existing curriculum to serve as a bridge between mathematics and mathematical applications in real life.  The main idea is teach students how to use Excel for mathematical calculations and presentations. Students organize their results in PowerPoint and present in classroom.  The second workshop is double the technological part, but students do everything in the same time.

Goals and Objective: In the second part of the workshop, tutors work as guest speakers, presenting methods for organization of data and applications related to lines and slopes. Later on, the students will present their study in front of the entire classroom.

Implementation:  This is the task

Results and Future Goals:

The project is rewarding. We need more support in the classroom and the Learning Center.

Next logical project is Learning Math with Flash

Collaborations, Experiences, Climate, and Culture: The collaboration between the Learning Center at CAC, and Professor Adams classes continue in math 092. This time students work with Excel, PowerPoint, and Word. They can only print their findings, or present in the classroom for extra credit.

Acknowledgement: The authors would like to thank all students for their effort to learn through technology. The first steps are difficult for everybody. Most of the students do not have much experience with technology - the workshop is their first attempt to learn how to learn with technologies.
