Topic:                                                         Taking Notes with PowerPoint

Gary Adams in collaboration with Temenoujka Fuller

2004 - 2008

Rationale: This is a long-running workshop. The workshop has 4 phases organized in the existing curriculum for developmental mathematics.  The main idea is teach students how to use computers to take animated notes for their math classes.

Goals and Objective: The goal of the workshop is to integrate the tutoring sessions into existing curriculum. The tutors work as guest speakers, presenting methods for taking notes with PowerPoint. Later on, the students will teach the most challenging section -- geometry. Students not only learn geometry better, but they learn how to get help in the learning center, how to present mathematical ideas in classroom, and how to use technology for learning.

Implementation:  The gallery of the first workshop present different phases of students progress.

Results and Future Goals: Students' results from the first workshops are available online. The workshops were very influential - they changed the culture of the classroom. Students from the next classes are ready to work with technology and there is the feeling that every semester we are improving everything.

The future is in using technology to connect people, organizations, ideas, you name it.

Collaborations, Experiences, Climate, and Culture: The collaboration between the Learning Center at CAC, and Professor Adams classes continue the last 10 semesters with constantly increasing effect. The Learning Center provide flexible help as needed, when needed, and in the form with which the instructor and the students are comfortable. The integration between the Learning Center and the classroom (computer lab for math) is full and successful. The work in the workshop is more pleasant and interesting every semester.

Acknowledgement: The authors would like to thank all students from the first workshops. The students make the project successful and changed the culture of using computers for learning.
