Bread Author: Julie Crockett April 2008

History: The idea for this essay evolved from a single exercise. The assignment: to write about something that I was an expert at; huh? Working in the kitchen, and cleaning up toast crumbs the idea came, and I decided that I could write about the art of bread-making. The piece became a character sketch and essay focusing on my relationship with my mother-in-law, Jennie Hancock Crockett.
Background: This essay explores the relationship between mother and daughter-in-law using the metaphor of food, specifically bread.

Future Goals: Bread is still a work in progress; it eventually will become part of a collection of family essays and stories entitled The House with Many Windows.
