Central Arizona College is a higher learning institution featuring three campuses and seven centers located throughout Pinal County. All campuses and centers provide face-to-face as well as online learning services.
The Tutor Training Program encompasses the three levels required for tutor certification by the College Reading & Learning Association. The training program is fully funded and mandatory for all tutors. The training for each level takes one semester to complete, which includes a formal and informal component. For each level, the formal component is two days (10 hours total) for new tutors, and one day (5 hours) for all tutors, including all returning tutors. The informal component includes ongoing supervised tutor training in the work-place. During the informal component, Learning Specialists and Master Tutors help new tutors to learn the practical applications of theoretical aspects of tutoring pedagogy presented in the two-day of formal tutor training. This new variant of our training program continues for three consecutive semesters. The full cycle of our new training program was successfully implemented as follows:
- Level 1 was implemented in fall 2010. The topics and some materials for level 1 are presented in the Summary Chart L1.
- Level 2 was successfully implemented in spring 2011. The topics and some materials for level 2 are presented in the Summary Chart L2.
- Level 3 was implemented in the fall semester of year 2011. The topics and some materials for level 3 are presented in Summary Chart L3.
The change of the program to two day formal training for each level, followed by informal training, was designed to provide sufficient time for ongoing tutor training focused on one level of completion per semester. The first day of training for each level is divided in two sections. The first section is from 8 AM to 12 PM (morning session). Prospective tutors of math, science, and technology are invited to this session. The second section of the first day is specifically developed for reading, writing, and other tutors (afternoon section). Although the topics for the two sections are identical, the content and activities are designed differently depending on the area of tutoring.
The students enrolled in educational programs at Central Arizona College who are interested in the art and science of the tutoring can enroll in two classes required for tutor certification, EDU101 and EDU10.
